How big is your target audience?

New Zealand has a population
of just under 4.3 million people.
But this road sign near the summit of Mt Eden suggests otherwise! Scrub out a few vital letters and the intended audience changes radically - Pedestrians or Ian? Carefully targeting every piece of design is critical, or
you run the risk of key people feeling indifferent, misinformed or alienated. Is that Ian in the bottom right hand corner?

Don't drink and ride

I know what this sign is supposed to mean but the unfortunate addition of the liquor ban sign below seems to change its meaning. It's amazing how many ambiguous signs are around us if you care to look - all the more surprising when you consider that signage is meant to instruct, direct and inform people without having to think and interpret too much. Anyway, watch out for drunken stunt cyclists in Keith Hay Park, Auckland if you happen to be there. More curious signs to come soon...

Waiheke Dirt Track Club sign

A battered old nearside car door, a simple stencil and a can of spray paint. What could be easier for a very effective sign for the Waiheke Dirt Track Club's Racing Sunday? I saw this a few weeks ago and thought, even with the abbreviation, you still know what it's all about. Nice work on a very low budget!

Rock face

Stony Batter, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island got it's name from unusual rock formations deposited as a result of volcanic activity more than 8 million
years ago. On a visit there, I spotted some more recent human activity that had transformed this huge boulder into a cheeky character.

It pays to be different

I walked past a well designed and planned promotional event for the Rugby World Cup the other day outside No1 Queen Street. Banners were everywhere and flyers were being handed out left, right and centre. But all I could look at was the statue ten metres away with a traffic cone placed perfectly on its head... and I'm a rugby fan. The human brain is big on aesthetics and is wired to notice what's different. And the simple moral is: always differentiate.
