Q: How do you design an on brand reception area?

Angle: cast tonnes of concrete in situ

When McConnell Dowell relocated to a new head office they needed an interior design for their reception area. The new space needed to reflect their large scale, multi-discipline construction projects as well as being surprising, stimulating and welcoming.

The focal point of the warm, construction-inspired space is a 4m diameter concrete desk. The desk was cast in situ and profiled to resemble a section of large scale concrete pipe. The position of the desk in the room corresponds to a recess in the ceiling, almost like a section of tunnel lining.

The design and construction was successfully completed within a limited time and budget to complement the new office fit out.

McConnell Dowell reception

McConnell Dowell's reception space is designed to reflect the nature of the company's work – large scale, multi-discipline construction projects. Layout, structure, graphics, materials and lighting combine to create a warm and stimulating welcome.

To the left of the desk is a logo feature wall – a section of the McConnell Dowell logo seems to grow out of the floor and beyond ceiling height – a feature that suggests large scale construction.

The rear wall displays a stylised representation of a geological cross section – tunneling is a key activity of the company, or waves – marine construction is also a speciality.

Feature lighting, contemporary furniture and warm, natural woods and paintwork complete the space and soften some of the hard edged features.
